January 2012: Legal News

1) As we reported previously, Connecticut has become the first state in the country to mandate that certain employers with 50 or more employees provide five days paid sick leave each year to their "service workers". This new law is effective January 1 of this year. The Connecticut Paid Sick Leave Law is not only controversial and complicated, but can be challenging to implement. Contact KardasLarson for assistance in developing or updating your policies around paid time off to be compliant with this new requirement.

2) The National Labor Relations Board has agreed to postpone the effective date of its employee rights notice-posting rule at the request of the federal court in Washington, DC hearing a legal challenge regarding the rule. Until this postponement, required employers would need to comply with this posting on January 31, 2012. The Board's ruling states that it has determined that postponing the effective date of the rule would facilitate the resolution of the legal challenges that have been filed with respect to the rule. The new implementation date is April 30, 2012. KardasLarson will continue to keep you appraised on this requirement.
